New Ratio is an ensemble that explores the musical possibilities and limits of a human-machine constellation. Within the performance, four guitarists are partly conducted by a robot and joined by four robotic, self-playing guitars to create a contemplative blend of soundscapes, ambient music, and minimalism through improvisation and algorithmic control. The aim is for the audience to experience the process of a self-regulating system. The project’s name alludes to the "Ratio Club," a British dining club from the 1950s where psychologists, engineers, and mathematicians exchanged ideas about cybernetics.
New Ratio is an extension of Markus Rom’s project Oh No Noh, with which he performs concerts using guitar and MIDI robots.
